Sixers Youth Foundation

IMPACT REPORT

2024-2025

About

Established in 2015, the Sixers Youth Foundation is the nonprofit affiliate of the Philadelphia 76ers. Through grant funding and capacity building opportunities we have partnered with more than 30 nonprofit organizations serving primarily middle-school aged youth in the Greater Delaware Valley region.

Our Mission

To use the power of basketball and the influence of the Philadelphia 76ers brand to inspire future generations in the communities where our fans live, work and play.

Our Vision

We envision communities where all children can create, pursue, and realize their dreams and live productive lives.
A Letter From

Leslie & Marjorie

Ten years ago, the Sixers Youth Foundation was formed with the vision of communities where all children can create, pursue, and realize their dreams. That vision has been shaped by listening to our partners and learning from young people what they need to thrive. Guided by the pillars of trust-based philanthropy, we have built increasingly meaningful relationships with grantee partners rooted in support that extend well beyond individual projects. As we celebrate this milestone and reflect on 2025, we remain driven by our continued progress in strategic grantmaking, hands-on service, and professional development across Philadelphia, Camden, and the Greater Delaware Valley.

In honor of our 10-year anniversary, we coordinated a special Day of Enrichment that brought all our grantee partners together. Leaders from each organization were invited to attend a professional development conference that focused on advocacy, participatory budgeting, public-private partnerships, youth education, social media, and the arts. The Foundation was proud to serve as a collaborating conference sponsor, reaffirming our belief that shared learning and connection strengthen the entire nonprofit ecosystem.

Academic enrichment and access to quality play continued to be central to our mission. The Foundation partnered with the 76ers Community Relations and Social Responsibility team to host a regional Math Hoops tournament in Philadelphia. We also sponsored two Philadelphia-area students to represent the Foundation in the tournament finals in New York City, congratulating them with a special sendoff that included autographed items, personalized jerseys, and a visit to the 76ers Training Complex.
Hands-on service remained a powerful expression of our values. Nearly 200 volunteers participated in the 76ers Staff Day of Service at Farnham Park, where the Foundation recently refurbished a basketball court. Additional community efforts included involvement with local summer camps, fast break clinics, summer hoops tournaments, community walks, and back-to-school events.

Professional development through our Young Friends Group remained a core area of impact this year. We hosted our second Front Office Panel as part of the Young Friends Professional Development Series, where 76ers staff shared their career journeys and offered advice for those aspiring to work in the sports industry. We were very proud to see engagement from our Young Friends through volunteerism and fundraising.

The progress of the past decade would not be possible without the dedication of our Board of Directors, the ongoing partnership of the Philadelphia 76ers, our supporters in the community, and the trust of our grantee partners. As we look ahead, we remain committed to growing alongside the youth and communities we serve—ensuring that every young person has the opportunity to imagine and build a brighter future.

With Gratitude,

Leslie Walker

12 BARS OF CHARITY

In conjunction with other local nonprofits including the Eagles Autism Foundation, Flyers Charities, Phillies Charities, and more, SYF took part in the 12 Bars of Charity fundraiser event on Saturday, December 14th, 2024, at Xfinity Live in Philadelphia for the second year.

The event served as a friendly competition to raise funds among the participating nonprofit organizations. Each organization chose a representing color for their team’s sweatshirt that served as their ticket to the event. The sweatshirt was sold for $35 with each organization receiving $15 from each order. Establishments within Xfinity Live offered discounted drink prices throughout the event.

We had an increase in the number of Young Friends who participated and helped us fundraise, as we made the event a fun competition for them. The support from HBSE staff that showed up and purchased sweatshirts was much larger than last year as well. Last year, we took 2nd place with our fundraising efforts, but this year we won 1st place by raising $1,527.

Book Drive for Tree House Books

On Christmas Day, Tree House Books, a local Philadelphia bookstore, experienced a devastating loss when a pipe burst and ruined thousands of books that supplied their library. In response to this tragedy, SYF made a generous donation of $3,500 to help replenish their collection, with a focus on books for middle school students. Our group of Young Friends spent the month of February collecting a total of 405 gently used books to help refill their shelves and ensure that local students have access to the resources they need to grow and succeed.

SYF NIGHT/DAY

January 31, 2025
The Sixers Youth Foundation was recognized and celebrated at the 76ers home game on January 31st, 2025. Grantee partners were hosted in a suite supplied with complimentary food and beverages, and youth from our grantee partners’ organizations sat in the upper level. During warmups, multiple 76ers players wore Sixers Youth Foundation-branded t-shirts with our 10th anniversary logo. Youth participants took part in special experiences including VIP warmups, pregame and halftime hi-five tunnels, and a post-game meet and greet with Jared McCain.
In addition to SYF Night, we coordinated our first ever SYF Day. For SYF Day, our team, along with our Young Friends, spent the afternoon volunteering with our grantee partner, Leveling the Playing Field (LPF). We sorted newly donated play and sports equipment, taking inventory to assist LPF with redistributing to community groups. As an additional token of support, we provided $1,500 worth of sports bras to support their efforts. We were able to gather video footage of the day which was then highlighted at that evening’s game.

Day of Enrichment

As part of our 2025 Day of Enrichment activity, we invited each of our grantee partners to attend the annual Council of New Jersey Grantmakers Conference, offering a complimentary ticket for each organization. The conference explored how philanthropy and nonprofits can work together to strengthen civic engagement, diving into key topics like advocacy, participatory budgeting, social media, public-private partnerships, youth education, and the arts. In addition, SYF proudly served as a collaborating sponsor for this year’s conference.

Summit & Nonprofit Events

Philadelphia Youth Sports Collective

Each year, the Philadelphia Youth Sports Collaborative (PYSC) hosts a summit to bring together organizations serving and supporting youth sports and each year we serve as a sponsor. This year’s summit focused on mental health. The event featured professional athletes, including the Delaware Blue Coats’ General Manager, Jameer Nelson, Women’s US Rugby Olympian, Ariana Ramsey, and retired National Women’s Soccer League Champion, Sinead Farrelly. Conversations focused on how these athletes approach mental health including advocating for themselves and others for more resources to support positive mental health within the field of sports.

CNJG Annual Meeting

A highlight was our high school teams serving as mentors, with high schools hosting and judging middle school tournaments (alongside adult volunteers). High school captains spoke to middle school debaters on the impact ASAP Debate has had on their lives, shared debate tips, and provided the opportunity to provide feedback on cases. Students from Bodine High School spoke about advocacy and how they used skills gained in ASAP Debate to successfully advocate for afterschool funding in front the Philadelphia School Board.

ASAP Debate is very proud of the growth shown this year by two newer teams--George W. Nebinger School and McCall Elementary & Middle School. Nebinger's team, which is coached by a parent who donates her time in the morning before work, won December's tournament despite only being in their second year. And McCall, whose team started this year, won the final tournament in March. For both teams, consistent and meaningful support from ASAP's Director of Debate and Drama helped coaches gain confidence and unlock their students' potential. We are excited to host several McCall students at this year's Summer Speech Academy, and look forward to the team's continued success. Funding from the Sixers helped ensure a smooth debate season during a period of transition among debate staff."

This year, Breakthrough became an 8-year program. For the first time, 5th graders are now included in High School Ready programming along with 6th, 7th, and 8th grades. Breakthrough also expanded its College Bound program for high school students, offering end-to-end enrichment and support from 5th through 12th grades."

This year, we were able to enhance our technology to create a smoother, more seamless experience for families applying for and using our grants. We developed a new mission statement to better reflect our vision and goals. We implemented a new software tool to more efficiently gather testimonials and photos from families, helping us strengthen our storytelling and engagement with partners."

Nationally, Learn Fresh has evolved into one of the country’s leading organizations for experiential math and STEM education. After focusing on supporting families and virtual classrooms during the pandemic, we have observed a significant resurgence in demand for the physical board game and in-class program across the region, culminating in a 3x increase in participating schools/sites. Over 50% of the sites participating in 2019 are still participating in the program in 2025, an extraordinarily high rate considering that we observe 20-30% annual turnover from educators switching sites or leaving the profession."

From July 2024 to June 2025, we have distributed over $1,113,167.90 worth of sports equipment to 289 unique schools, youth programs, rec leagues, and other community organizations in the Greater Philadelphia area. We’ve been able to help more schools introduce basketball to their students with the generous help of the Sixers Youth Foundation:

In their report, beneficiary SS. Cyril & Philomena School shared, “About 75 children at recess daily. They play football some play volleyball and then we started a basketball club on Friday afternoons after school with all the basketballs you gave us each child has their own basketball.”

Another beneficiary Ethan Allen Elementary School shared, “Students from our school have a chance to learn and practice many different sports. They play soccer, volleyball, basketball, football, or even track and field. Participation in those sports would not be possible without LPF's donations, so those donations have great impact in our Physical Education program.

To expand access to Healthy U programming, we hired a part-time exercise specialist who now supports weekly personal training for patients. This addition has increased participation in year-round personal training, with nearly 70 patients receiving services in the past year.

We are also advancing our research and dissemination efforts. Findings from our patient survey on camp participation will be presented at Obesity Week in Atlanta this November, helping us share insights with a broader audience. Finally, we convened a Family Advisory Board composed of eight families, which provides ongoing feedback to help us improve and tailor Healthy U programming to better meet the needs of the children and families we serve.

We are grateful for the Sixers Youth Foundation’s support in our work to keep our communities healthy."

This year, NOMO continued to strengthen and expand our programs and partnerships across Philadelphia. We deepened our workforce development impact by launching a new Driving Initiative that is currently assisting 50 youth in obtaining their driver’s licenses. In addition, NOMO broadened its vocational and creative programming through sewing, gaming, electrical, and e-commerce courses—equipping youth with practical, transferable skills that support future employment and entrepreneurship."

Summer Camp

This period, we established a new collaboration with the Boys and Girls Club, creating additional opportunities for youth to access safe, supportive spaces and enrichment activities. We also expanded our existing partnership with Jefferson University, which now allows NOMO participants to utilize the university’s basketball court for recreational and wellness programming."

Over the past year, with the support of the Sixers Youth Foundation, the Philadelphia Outward Bound School has deepened its engagement with a range of middle schools and K-8 schools throughout the city. The one-day “Insight” programs we have delivered to students at these schools have made a demonstrable impact on students’ sense of self-actualization and empowerment, and helped to encourage familiarity and comfort in the outdoors, while allowing trust to be built among students, families, and administrators in a way that has enabled us to involve students in more demanding programming such as our multi-day expedition programs."

Over the past three years, Sunrise Day Camp–Greater Philadelphia has experienced extraordinary growth, reflecting the increasing need for our programs and the strength of our local partnerships. In 2025, enrollment climbed again to 216 campers, representing a 40% increase from the previous year and more than double our 2023 attendance. This remarkable growth means that 119 more children—children with cancer and their siblings—are now under our care at camp compared to just two years ago. With higher enrollment has come an increase in operational needs, including the addition of one new bus route this summer to ensure safe and reliable transportation for our campers..

We have also deepened our reach into underserved communities, particularly through our partnership with St. Christopher’s Hospital for Children. The number of campers from St. Christopher more than tripled this summer, with 16 children registered and an entire bus stop created at the St. Christopher’s ER to facilitate access. Several St. Christopher social workers joined us at camp to experience firsthand the impact of Sunrise and to help strengthen our connection with the families we serve..

Our Sunrise on Wheels program has also expanded significantly across three Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP) sites, bringing the joy of camp directly to hospitalized children year-round. The program now averages 40–50 children each week and has logged more than 2,000 individual interactions this year—transforming long, difficult hospital days into moments of laughter and connection..

This year also marked a major milestone in community engagement with the launch of our first Friends of Sunrise Cocktail Party, held in the heart of Philadelphia. The event drew an enthusiastic crowd of supporters and helped broaden awareness and local commitment to the Sunrise mission."

The discovery component of our Strategic Planning process in the Spring of 2025 included engagement of a broad array of stakeholders (youth, parents, alumni, staff, board, donors, partners) and highlighted key strengths in programs supported by SYF including:

  • Summer Camps: one of UrbanPromise’s greatest strengths, keeping children engaged during the summer and offer young counselors leadership training
  • After-School Program: provides a safe space for students
  • Parents highlighted the consistency and structure of UrbanPromise’s programs as key strengths. Children benefit greatly from participating in initiatives like summer camps, which provide enriching experiences and emotional support.
  • Of the 36 parents surveyed whose children participated in programs such as the AfterSchool Program and Summer Camps, the majority reported exceptionally positive outcomes for their children.
  • Among 60 youth survey respondents who participated in After School programs and/or Summer camps, the vast majority reported that being part of these programs increased their openness to new experiences, supported character building, increased motivation for learning, helped grow their expectations for the future, and supported growth in emotional intelligence."

This year, CCPD successfully expanded the Open Gym Program by adding KIPP High School and H.B. Wilson School to the rotation of community sites. These additions increased access for youth across Camden City and enhanced engagement opportunities within local neighborhoods.

In addition, CCPD hosted several large-scale community events, including the Winter Wonderland City Community Celebration, which featured toys, food, candy, a hot chocolate station, festive decorations, a petting zoo nativity scene, and pony rides. The department also organized Mischievous Night, offering activities, giveaways, gift cards, and prizes to engage youth from East Camden and South Camden. Both events provided safe, family-friendly environments where youth could interact, participate in games, crafts, and sports, and build positive community connections."
